Consultation: Practising certificate endorsements
28 Mar, 2025
We’re holding a short consultation (online survey) to get your views on how to recognise graduates who hold new qualifications that the Board has accredited.
For example: the new *PET-CT graduates of the programme being delivered by the University of Auckland. *Postgraduate Certificate in Health Sciences in Positron Emission Tomography – computed tomography. This programme provides a route to practice in PET-CT in Aotearoa New Zealand.
When and what?
The consultation runs from Friday 28 March to 5pm, Friday 2 May 2025. It includes information about the use of endorsements (whether/how practitioners should have their additional education details recognised on their practising certificates). Click on the document link below to view more information about the consultation.
How?
You can access the survey here: Practising certificate endorsements. You can also view FAQs below, and a link to the consultation document.
Outcome
Following the consultation, feedback will be reviewed and considered before finalising proposed changes to the Notice. We’ll then publish a news item on our website detailing the outcome and linking to relevant information.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
- What’s an endorsement?
An endorsement is a way of describing, on a practitioner’s practising certificate, the different activities they’re permitted to perform – in addition to what they’re already permitted to perform in their current scope of practice.
- What’s the proposed change?
We’re proposing a relatively simple change to the Notice of the scope of practice for the Medical Radiation Technologists Board (MRTB). It would involve adding a statement to allow for endorsements. This means including information in a practitioner’s practising certificate that says what, if any additional education they have, and what activities they’re allowed to perform as a result.
- Can’t we do that already?
Not quite – this proposed change will make that easier. We currently use a process called ‘enabling conditions’, however, it’s no longer appropriate.
- Why are you proposing this change?
This proposed change will provide better clarity about the activities a practitioner is allowed to perform.
Practitioners with an endorsement (with appropriate education, knowledge, and skills) will be able to provide additional imaging/treatments – in addition to what they’re already allowed to do within their scope - because of the approved education they’ve done. It’s also a positive way to formally advise the public about the work that these practitioners can undertake.
- How does this protect the public?
The Register will show the endorsements that these practitioners have – they’ll also show on their practising certificate. This means that the practitioners who have completed the necessary qualification have Board approval to practise in those area. Practitioners are required to maintain their competence to practise in any are they’re endorsed in.
